modestroad's comment_fic prompt "DCU, Jason Todd, 28 Days Later" I had to take it. 28 Days Later is IMHO the most horrific "zombie" move I've seen, because unlike all others, the infected are still alive.
I mean I can totally deal with the idea of killing the re-animated corpse of a love one, but ldkflkhfjsdh Christ you kill someone in 28 days later, and you are the one who killed the, THAT SUCKS!

The cold night wind whipped against Dick as he waited on the dirty beach just south of Gotham city limits, five minutes ahead of the time Garth had agreed to meet him.
He felt the long cape tugging against his throat, two tight and then to loose. Dick wondered if there was some trick Bruce had never taught him to getting the confounded cape to bellow in a threatening manner rather than a lackluster, but highly agitating manner.

It's not my fault!
Toro said he wanted to sow the whole world with salt and then opted to solve his issues by going to kill a bad guy.
And Jason is all in my head bouncing up and down and going "YES!! Come to the Dark Side! Let me be a bad influence on him!!! please, please, please let me!!"
And that is then causing Bucky to be all irritated and plot Jason's death if Jason doesn't stop plotting to try and corrupt Toro. Meanwhile Dick is torn as to whether or not to stop Bucky, but come on, we all know Dick will because I mean . . . it's Dick.

OMG! I wrote a DCU fic! Don't get excited this is probably not gonna become usual. Sometimes, like with BSG or Bucky/ Toro I'm attacked by gazillions of plot bunnies. But meh, this plot bunny attacked and I thought it was too adorable to shoot dead ^^;;

This was kinda a practice with an idea I had, and I'm not sure I pulled it off because I'm not sure the writing device I used worked. But it was fun to try it.

Finale Exam
The clock on the unadorned metal wall began to chime. It would be only a few minutes now before it was time for Toro to be transferred.
"I still say they didn't need to drug me, Bucky." Toro pouted for what had to be the nine hundredth time in the five minutes since he'd drunk what the pretty blonde nurse had offered him.
He said nothing. Sometimes it was better not to respond.
Nearby, a plane engine started and he felt Toro begin to shake in his arms. In response, he rubbed Toro's back with a gentle, circular motion. "It's okay,"
"I know, Buck," Toro sighed. "I'm just nervous. It's so far away."
He kept rubbing until the shaking spell passed. Toro yawned and his eyelids began to droop. "I'll miss you, Buck."
Please fall asleep. I'm tired of this.
"Miss you too," he said. It seemed like a good answer.
"Bucky, what if I mess up?"
Then you'll be killed.
He forced a smiled. "You're not going to mess up, Toro. You're good at what you do, and you'll show the enemy what for."
Toro smiled, then yawned, "I'm gonna just take out some ammo –ammo," Toro yawned again. "Thingamajigs. Don't trust me with much more yet, not like they trust you."
Trust him? Yeah sure, to baby-sit.
He glanced at his watch and shifted Toro. Damn but this drug took forever to take affect.
"Wish they'd let me fight like you."
"Well, I am better than you. I- " He broke off horrified at the tone and words that had come out of him. He hadn't meant to say it, they had just tumbled out. He glanced down to see what damage he'd done; however, Toro still grinned, amusement flickering in his heavy lidded eyes.
"Jerk," Toro laughed through yet another yawn.
"Yeah well," he muttered, brushing Toro's hair back.
Toro moved away a little. "You hand is cold," he protested even as he fell asleep.
Finally
He glanced to his left and saw two Spetsnaz shuffle toward him. They paused half way to him and eyed each other, then eyed Toro.
"He's asleep you cowards. He's not going to set you on fire."
At the tone in his voice, both men hurried over, each man grabbing one of Toro's arms.

"He wouldn't set you on fire anyway," he muttered as Toro was dragged off. "He's been a good little communist for the last week."
"Is that your expert opinion, Winter Soldier?"
He leapt to his feet and saluted, ignoring the numbness in his leg caused by holding the brainwashed American in his lap for such a long time.
"Just a comment on how well Department X did their job, Sir."
Winter Soldier saw amusement in his superior's eyes. "I'll pass your confidence to them, but they don't share it. That one has been a disappointment, too unstable and curious." Karpov began to walk quickly toward the door and Winter Soldier followed him. "We could not even be sure he wasn't faking his loyalty to try and make an escape attempt on the plane."
"Yes, Sir."
General Karpov stopped and turned back around. "Tell me, Soldier, after this experience, have you any questions?"
"Questions, Sir?"
Karpov smiled. "Yes, questions. Things you did not understand or might want explained. If you do, you may pick one and ask it."
Winter Soldier paused and considered the odd command. There had been a host of things in connection with the American he'd not understood. The American had repeatedly called him a strange name, some of his reflexive response toward the American had been improper; in fact, he didn't even understand why the General had been so insistent the Winter Soldier be the one to watch the American.
However, he discarded those questions unimportant. After a few more agonizing moments trying to find something worth asking, Winter Soldier settled on easing his pride.
"Sir, if you are unsure of the American's mental conditioning, why send him to fight in Korea?"
I'm better than him
General Karpov grinned and his eyes lit up in the possessive way that always made Winter Soldier's chest swell with pride and stomach twist with fear. "Because Soldier, the American passed his last test. I am quite content with his mental conditioning."
Winter Soldier thought through that. It didn't make sense to him, but he'd used his one question and, after all, General Karpov hadn't said he'd understand the answer.
"I trust you have no further questions, Soldier?"
"Of course not, sir," Winter Soldier responded.
"Good, then come along and we will see about finding a way for you to better serve Mother Russia."
"Thank You, Sir."
I had a bad day.

Notes Short goofy idea that came to me at the con yesterday. Also I tend to use Toro's golden age origin more than his silver age one. because the Asbestos Lady is just dumb >.> So the goons were just run of the mill Golden Age goons.

"Hey, can I ask you a question?"
Tom looked up from the book he'd been trying to read and eyed James with suspicion. He knew that James wasn't likely to pull a gag or prank or other form of humiliation these days, but 'can I ask you a question' invoked automatic caution in Toro, even all these years later.
"If I say no, would it stop you?"
He caught a glint in James's eye, a hint of an almost smile at hearing the glib response Toro had begun using anytime Bucky asked him that, or any variation there.
James sat down on the other side of the couch and leaned back. "How'd you get Jim to let you fight? Not in WWII, but against crooks before the war started?"
Tom hid is disappointment that the proper response "not likely," had been omitted. "That's an odd question to ask now," Tom commented as a stall.

Note Betty is the female police officer who most often hung with Namor, but she was also in some Torch comics or some like her was, so I just used her.
( Jim, oh my goodness, Jim, you've got to put him, back, where are his clothes? Oh god if I have to take you in for kidnapping . . )
I wasn't even gonna post it except [Bad username: shiney_glor_chan] made the exact joke I'd doodled with Jason and Bucky (more or less) plus there's a pall point pen portrait of Bucky I did on the upper left corner that I'm fairly proud of.
So, to compliment this mornings post of Chibi crack, some more chibi crack, plus some stuff.

Epic fanfic fail!
This is an opening to an abandoned attempt at Bucky/Nightwing.
It ended up being jsut them talking and no . . anything else. Which I'm sure would make the OP sad given it was a Kink_Meme prompt (I mean unless I saw ohh look, long confessions and philosophy is their foreplay!)
Feel free to rake me over coals if I killed Nightwing in this. This is my first attempt writing him, and uhhh mostly I read Pre-Crisis DCU long long ago as a child
. . . So yeah, floundering in the deep end a bit here, feedback will only make try two better ^^
Confession - Nightwing&Post!Winter Soldier James, G - drabble
"Damn it, damn it all to hell!" Nightwing's partner swore. Nightwing watched the man he only knew as James, lean against the far wall a moment eyes closed and fists clenched, then he turned at kicked the wall, hard enough to make a light fixture shaking thud, but not so hard that his combat boots went through the cheap wall of the motel room.
Dick sat down on the bed warily. This was the fifth display if uncontrolled anger and he became less sure of this partnership the more it happened.
"They'll be back in a week." Dick said. He shifted on the bed and heard a mattress spring pop.
"We just have to wait for a better opportunity."
"And meanwhile Kronas makes another several million off human trafficking."
"We tracked the truck. The local police well pick the girls up alive, which is more than they'd be if we'd tried to bust the transfer then." Dick rubbed his neck. "Plus the Kronas contact wasn't there." He looked up and met his partner's brown eyes. "So whatever personal vendetta you were hoping to satisfy, James, you'd not have gotten."
He watched James's eyes widen every so slightly. "Damn it," Dick thought. He had hoped he'd been wrong about this being personal for James, but the facial twitch, as small as it had been, had spoken volumes.
"What did they do to you?"
James snorted. "This isn't the vendetta. This is trying to correct a past I can't undo.
Personal . . . personal comes later."

Also, as a historic note, the body count Toro lists is wrong. I know.
The character is primarly contemporary with the 50's and 60's so I opted to have the death count he lists by one given '56-ish. The actual number as of 2008, per the Japanese government, is 404,294.
( Toro, Bucky knew from asking, smoked in defiance of the conventions of this Brave New World. Bucky smoked because it had been the Soviets who'd broke him of the habit. )
Tiny fic bit
Jim looked at Bucky as one would a man offering a sure-fire cure-all for just a few dollars. "Why is this any of your business?"
Bucky swung his legs like the innocent youth he was not. "Well see, your moping after Lady Jackie is making Toro cross." Bucky shrugged. "When he gets cross he gets nasty, especially to me. And when he's nasty to me, well I have to- ah, put him back in place if you follow, and when I do that, Steve gets annoyed, and golly, when Steve is cross none of us are happy."
"You could just not pick a fight with Toro." Jim pointed out.
Bucky shook his head. "Sorry Torch, no can do. Besides he's been picking the fights," Bucky said, pointing to a bruise on his cheek. "Which is also why this matters to me. All the anger he's not taking out on you he's taking out on me. I have to retaliate, and again, when I do, we get a peevish Captain America."
Bucky spread his arms out, "See, so your love life is very much my business. It's a matter of self-preservation in fact. For all of us."
Jim rested his cheek against his hand and tried to work out if Bucky was helping, pranking, or just misguided. Dealing with Captain America's exuberant partner always made him wish Horton had put more about human children onto the learning tapes, and less math and science.
No idea where to go with it, but it is interesting, so I record it here for posturity before I loose the reandom scrap of paper I wrote it on.
Torch canon had a cruh on Spitfire. It's kinda cute but Roy Thomas writes it a tad melodramatic for my taste.
And by "a tad" I mean I cringe a lot whenever The Torch angsts to himself about how no one can love him becanse he's an android.
He angsts on this at least twice per every three pages, on average I think.
In case you must it the first five thousand times and forget he's not really human.
So I'm kinda happy Mike Carey has decided the Torch doesn't want to be human. He's lonely someitmes yes, but he doens't actually want to be human Or so Carey said in an interview. Will see how that pans out in the actual series. I hope it does. I'm intrigued by that idea. Because I never fricking understood why all andorids-like-things either want to be us or kill us.
So I'm interested in seeing the Torch wanting to do neither.
There were more layoffs. Dodged a bullet, but it was stressful.
Took My frustrations out on Toro in a fic. I tried to take them out on Ultimate!Steve, but he wouldn't have it.

Notes Ahhh okay this is mostly just me playing around with the concept of waking up 50 some odd years into the future and how much that might suck. Which has now happened to uhhh most of the Invaders. Even Namor had a bit of a Time Jump, and so did the Torch 0.o
I'd actually prefer to write an Ultimate!Steve fic with this concept, because for me he's the most interesting, but there's some new Ultimate canon coming out in August that might mess with what I want to do, some I'm holding back until I see if there's more Gail development.
So, For today, it was Toro that I explored this theme with.
this is not beta'd because I'm not even sure it's a whole fic yet. I may work it into another story. I don't know.
