I enjoyed Tommyknockers much more this second time through. I think knowing what it was gonna be about helped a lot.
It drew some very interesting symbolism, I know the one that is most often cited is to nuclear power and the general inability of man to be mature enough for our toys but I saw a lot of Drug and addiction/addict analogies and was thinking it was just due to recent events but then read that Stephen King had a family intervention right after finishing the book and says the drug symbolism is very much there, more so than he realized.
So yay. I coud still pass freshman English I guess. *LOL*
Still though there were giant whooping sections of that book that did nothing but pull it town. If anyone else has read it, is there any literary reason at *all* for the chapters dedicated to the formation of the town and the preacher impregnating all the woman?
I mean ok it's got the people are stupid and spiteful theme and the something is wrong in the Haven area theme, but honestly Ev Hillman went into the latter, and the former is pretty much the theme of the whole damn book and don't feel random chapter dedicated to town history added anything relevant.
Also, it's oddly nonlinear in places. You'll see the characters day, then three chapter slater the events that lead up to their death will be revealed. And by "in places" I mean one chapter specifically just seems out of order. I don't think this non sequential literary device was used consistently enough to not make random chapter of WTF necessary.
But all in all good book and I relaly like Bobbi and Gard's relation ship. It's very well done and the love scene they have kills me.
Someone needs to do a TV seriees for this book.
Because movies and minis suck. There's too much in King's big whomping novel's
That BTW is what I would produce were I a rich TV Mogul. I'd by the rights to a big whomping King Novel and say "this shall be a one season TV series. You have 24 45 minutes episodes and a really decent budget. Go forth and do this mother fucker RIGHT damn it!
And then if that worked, next season would be another whomping king novel.
I think that would be cool.
I also think a TV series made up of old sci-fi short stories would be way cool.
Speaking of, so TNT looks somewhat serious about making the Talisman a mini series.
OH! And btw, early in the book Gard wakes up from a drunken binge on Arcadia beach in view of the Alhambra Inn and talks to a boy named Jack. Thought that was kinda cool.
Not 100% sure of it is Jack Sawyer. He indicates his mom died in a drunken accident, or at least that's what Gard assumes. All Jack actually says is that an accident ended his mom's drinking *shrugs*

So, I should be drawing Cuthbert for the
pencilslingers challegne this week, but when I had time to sketch today at work, Bobbi Anderson (from Tommyknockers) was stuck in my head.
So I sketched her in various stages of being a Tommyknocker.
I'm quite proud if the middle portrait!

photoshop. I say that because I'm proud of the effect, for a highlighter.
I had another little Tommyknocker sketched out based on the actual mythology of Tommyknockers protesting that Bobbi was NOT a Tommyknocker, but it accidentally got trashed :(
The actual mythology btw is that they are either harmless but playful little fey miners that knock to warn of impending cave ins, or they are not harmless and cause the cave ins, or they are not fey at all but rather the spirits of killed miners who either warn their fellow living minder by knocking, or vengefully spirits that kill other miners.
I've always found it kinda random that Stephen King called the People-turned-aleins Tommyknockers.

Ka found out that I'm reading Stephen King books again. It usually does, and throws me something weird.
So today in the world of "I bet they wouldn't have said that if I were not reading an SK book"
Weatherman: Ike is epxected to reach from Dallas Texas to Bangor Main.
Ani: WTF
Not only was that totlaly random on the weatherman's part (it was the local weather, why LOCAL weather needs to say Bangor Main as oppossed to Main, I don't now) I'm not even sure if it's true!

In case you missed it:
I haz made a community I know I've made many communities. But this one is special. This one is NOT related to Harry Potter! 'But Ani' you say, "how is that special, the Dirk community isn't HP related either?' Right, but I didn't make that one, I just inherited it. I'm pretty sure this is my first not HP related LJ community made by me, because even my doujinshi one was mostly HP!
So again, I present:
pencilslingers
It is for DARK TOWER fanart. Also fanart to any and all related book and by related I mean "written by Stepehn King." But most of the big ones relate to DT somehow.
Because there needed to be one and I keept threatening to do one so I figured I amy as well get on with it.
Please join if it please ya.
^__^
And you have no idea how long I agonized over that name!
originally it was ognna be art_ofthe_beam, but then I thought pencilslingers was neater.

Marvel Adapts The Stand
Coolness!!
I at least want to get the Captain Tripps part . . . I'm I the only one who really only likes that part? I mean ok the second half is . . . all right. Flagg is somewhat cool and I like Stu and they guys journey but it is no where near as awesome as the first half.
OH AND: From the defunct Realm Comics

Dghflhlfhlsafh BSG/ALIENS (image done in fun not for any real story that I know of) I WANT THIS CROSSOVER! Do you hear me Dark Horse? I. Want. This.
And I still have my money being on Bishop for the 5th Cylon. =P
Maybe Annalee Call, but I think Bishop. I mean C'mon he's based on the big poobah founder of the Company.
And somehow how X-files needs to be worked into this.

So Dark Tower/Stephen King fans . . . interested in an art fest type thing maybe?
I thinking we needs some fanart love for King's stuff, specially Dark Tower, and I was thinking maybe a little fest or exchange might be fun. Like everyone sign up and request king related fanart from others?
Is there interest? If so, I might start a little community for it.
What were y'all thoughts on the Marvel adaptation of Book 4?
I never got the whole thing. I suck. I still need the last issue and one in the middle that I somehow missed.
I like it overall.
I think I'd almost rather see comics's of DT than a movie.
I also have this insane urge to re-read Tommyknockers. I don't knwo why. i dind't like the book. It's think the idea is awesome but that book needs about 600 less pages.
I other news.
I really need to keep better financial records *head desk*
