Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.
And I hope everyone who works in retail, like my husband and friends, freaking survives the experience!

Here is my little fandom bit for Thanksgiving, all I really had time to get out (and even that was at what, 1:00 am *L*)

These first few are from the Invaders Comic in the 70's.
I'm never quite sure what to say to Frank Robbins; however, I'm always happy when someone else has to take over for him. It's just *odd*

Nothing I scanned quite demonstrates that the full scale of the oddness his art can generate, but they're still a bit WTF.

Sorry this spam is spam with fandom content though.
I participated in [info]chamberofchills and aside from my normal exchange, I also did two pinch hits SOOOOO, now that the reveals are up, I can finally post my stuff!

1. Title: The Demon of Men
Gift For: [info]thealisonbailey
Rating: PG-13
Pairings/Characters: Bucky/Steve (I KNOW I wrote it!), Dr. Strange cameo
Labels: Drama
Warnings: Demonic possession, Language
A/N: I think I borrowed from just about everything I've ever seen to get this to work. Hopefully it does :)
Prompt: Captain America; gen/horror/adventure/wuv <3 ; Bucky tries any way possible to communicate with Steve on the other side. Things go wrong and Cap's spirit has to save Buck's soul from a fate worse than death.
Summary: Seriously, you'd think people in fictional stories would know better than to touch ouija boards.

Listening to the two friends brought Bucky's memory back to the war and the down time he and Steve had spent together between battles, just being young.

2. Title: Halloween In Bed
Gift For: [info]milleniumrex
Rating: G
Pairings/Characters: Bucky/Kate, Patriot, Wiccan, Teddy, Stature
Labels: Fluff, fan comic
Warnings: Kate is underaged, but other than that, nothing.
A/N: This comic is intentionally without words. I thought it would be cute that way.
Prompt: "Prompt 2: Young Avengers/Captain America, Hurt/Comfort; a training injury ruins Kate's Halloween plans, so Bucky brings Halloween to her. I'd like Bucky/Kate in a pre-existing relationship. Horror movie snark is always a plus, too. :)
Summary: The Young Avengers are all set to go out for Halloween, when Bucky points out Kate can't and they are not going to exclude her. Nobody argues with Bucky.

Preview:

Halloween in Bed: Full sized

3. Title: One Night In Many
Gift for: [info]lydia_morlock
Rating: R
Labels: None
Warnings: Depending on canon, Kitty may be underage here by two years
A/N: You presented an interesting rare ship and I hope I did them justice. I really liked the Kitty and Caliban arc way back in the early X-Books, and based the characterization of that, rather than Caliban's more recent stories. I hope it works.
Summary: Kitty gives Caliban a treat on Halloween Night

This fic was actually posted on the community [info]theinvaders on Halloween, so it's not quite "late" per se. Just late to my own LJ.

I will have some late Halloween art up later, (Robins, Harry Potter, and hopefully Steve and Tony but they are being CRANKY!)

For now, the fic:

I had fun with this, but it really made me miss being young enough to go Trick or Treating :(

And we didn't have any Trick or Treaters come by at all, so I dind't even get to hand out candy :( :( :( :(

The best small child Halloween moment though, I'll share when I get the Robin(s) art done *crosses fingers that she does not flake on it*
Bucky Goofy
[info]jynx made me do this.
I'd mentioned Bucky would make a good Green Lantern. She agreed.
Then shoved an art bunny my way by wondering what his Green Lantern outfit would look like.
So really she made me draw this.

Bucky Gets a new job.

Come on, Bucky would make an awesome Green Lantern. You know it.
And if anyone writes this for me, I will love you forever.

Summery Jim tries to be a parent for Toro even when things are hard.
This fic was inspired by a discussion from some of my coworkers on what they'd do if their kid was homosexual. I wanted desperately to write someone doing the opposit of that, and Jim and Toro leant themselves to that need.

Notes Originally this was just a 15 minute fic. I don't think I've ever re-written anything so extensively in a while. Much thanks to [info]kijikun for giving the first draft a read through and making helpful suggestions.

not odd, eccentric
Oh dear god, I may end up writing a fic with Jason Todd and Toro Raymond.

It's not my fault!

Toro said he wanted to sow the whole world with salt and then opted to solve his issues by going to kill a bad guy.

And Jason is all in my head bouncing up and down and going "YES!! Come to the Dark Side! Let me be a bad influence on him!!! please, please, please let me!!"

And that is then causing Bucky to be all irritated and plot Jason's death if Jason doesn't stop plotting to try and corrupt Toro. Meanwhile Dick is torn as to whether or not to stop Bucky, but come on, we all know Dick will because I mean . . . it's Dick.

These are the things I think about while at work.

OMG! I wrote a DCU fic! Don't get excited this is probably not gonna become usual. Sometimes, like with BSG or Bucky/ Toro I'm attacked by gazillions of plot bunnies. Finale Exam

The clock on the unadorned metal wall began to chime. It would be only a few minutes now before it was time for Toro to be transferred.

"I still say they didn't need to drug me, Bucky." Toro pouted for what had to be the nine hundredth time in the five minutes since he'd drunk what the pretty blonde nurse had offered him.

He said nothing. Sometimes it was better not to respond.

Nearby, a plane engine started and he felt Toro begin to shake in his arms. In response, he rubbed Toro's back with a gentle, circular motion. "It's okay,"

"I know, Buck," Toro sighed. "I'm just nervous. It's so far away."

He kept rubbing until the shaking spell passed. Toro yawned and his eyelids began to droop. "I'll miss you, Buck."

Please fall asleep. I'm tired of this.

"Miss you too," he said. It seemed like a good answer.

"Bucky, what if I mess up?"

Then you'll be killed.

He forced a smiled. "You're not going to mess up, Toro. You're good at what you do, and you'll show the enemy what for."

Toro smiled, then yawned, "I'm gonna just take out some ammo –ammo," Toro yawned again. "Thingamajigs. Don't trust me with much more yet, not like they trust you."

Trust him? Yeah sure, to baby-sit.

He glanced at his watch and shifted Toro. Damn but this drug took forever to take affect.

"Wish they'd let me fight like you."

"Well, I am better than you. I- " He broke off horrified at the tone and words that had come out of him. He hadn't meant to say it, they had just tumbled out. He glanced down to see what damage he'd done; however, Toro still grinned, amusement flickering in his heavy lidded eyes.

"Jerk," Toro laughed through yet another yawn.

"Yeah well," he muttered, brushing Toro's hair back.

Toro moved away a little. "You hand is cold," he protested even as he fell asleep.

Finally

He glanced to his left and saw two Spetsnaz shuffle toward him. They paused half way to him and eyed each other, then eyed Toro.

"He's asleep you cowards. He's not going to set you on fire."

At the tone in his voice, both men hurried over, each man grabbing one of Toro's arms.
idiots

"He wouldn't set you on fire anyway," he muttered as Toro was dragged off. "He's been a good little communist for the last week."

"Is that your expert opinion, Winter Soldier?"

He leapt to his feet and saluted, ignoring the numbness in his leg caused by holding the brainwashed American in his lap for such a long time.

"Just a comment on how well Department X did their job, Sir."

Winter Soldier saw amusement in his superior's eyes. "I'll pass your confidence to them, but they don't share it. That one has been a disappointment, too unstable and curious." Karpov began to walk quickly toward the door and Winter Soldier followed him. "We could not even be sure he wasn't faking his loyalty to try and make an escape attempt on the plane."

"Yes, Sir."

General Karpov stopped and turned back around. "Tell me, Soldier, after this experience, have you any questions?"

"Questions, Sir?"

Karpov smiled. "Yes, questions. Things you did not understand or might want explained. If you do, you may pick one and ask it."

Winter Soldier paused and considered the odd command. There had been a host of things in connection with the American he'd not understood. The American had repeatedly called him a strange name, some of his reflexive response toward the American had been improper; in fact, he didn't even understand why the General had been so insistent the Winter Soldier be the one to watch the American.

However, he discarded those questions unimportant. After a few more agonizing moments trying to find something worth asking, Winter Soldier settled on easing his pride.

"Sir, if you are unsure of the American's mental conditioning, why send him to fight in Korea?"

I'm better than him

General Karpov grinned and his eyes lit up in the possessive way that always made Winter Soldier's chest swell with pride and stomach twist with fear. "Because Soldier, the American passed his last test. I am quite content with his mental conditioning."

Winter Soldier thought through that. It didn't make sense to him, but he'd used his one question and, after all, General Karpov hadn't said he'd understand the answer.

"I trust you have no further questions, Soldier?"

"Of course not, sir," Winter Soldier responded.

"Good, then come along and we will see about finding a way for you to better serve Mother Russia."

"Thank You, Sir."

I had a bad day.

Non Spoiler Thoughts on Avenger/Invaders 12 of 12

Well last issue of this train wreck is out at last.
I expected/hope there would be a point to this mini series beyond "lets have the Invaders and Avengers beat each other up for NINE issues then find a plot and cram it into the last three issues."

And yes there is actually a point and ummmmm okay I'm jumping up in down in glee but I do not think this point was worth the 12 issues. I will go more into this point when I talk spoilers.

I think they also wanted there to be another point about heroes and sacrifice and such, but the writing was pretty convoluted so it was sorta painful to read at times. And it was like trying to find a plot/point to Dragonball Z really (Have you noticed I think the fights were too long and overshadowed everything else? I can't say enough how bad I find the pacing in this mini series to be and I LIKED Secret Wars).

I'm sorry to say that now, having read the last issue, I really can't rec this to anyone but the most die hard Invader fans, or anyone who was really desperate to see Steve interacting with Tony every now and again. It just doesn’t have much going for it. If it's cheap, like 5.00 or so at Half Price books, then sure, buy ti for fun.
However, for my money, neither the art nor the storytelling warrant spending big bucks on this. In fact I don't want to add up what buying all 12 issues cost me this year because I think I'd be depressed.

Issue 12 did get back to having decent art, so that was nice. But yeah, as I expected, the ending was jumbled, quickly done and kinda boring. The whole way they stopped Red Skull was, I think, a plot from care bears that they borrowed. There was no build, I didn't care, and geezus this guy can't write Spiderman to save his life.

Part of the problem, I think, was the main drama at this point was "will Bucky change his future or not?"

Ummmm this wouldn't even be that much of a question even IF this series were not pre-dating the Secret Invasion. But it pre-dates Secret Invasion, so you know what, this sin't evena spoiler. Guess what, guys, in a comic that happens nearly 1 year behind current canon continuity, Bucky does not prevent himself from becoming the Winter Soldier and destroy an entire year's worth of Captain America continuity.

The sky is also blue.

So yeah.
Were there some fun bits? Sure. There's some cute back and forth liones, Toro and Buck can be fun in the earlier issues, Jan has a moment of awesome, and there's some great Tony angst and wibbling. But overall, very uneven art story and plot makes this whole thing feel like a waste of a good concept.

SPOILER: ie: Marvel Gives Ani Chrstimas in almost July )

So yeah, love for the spoiler, not much love for the series.
I want a re-do.

So then, why the hell does Bucky keep the metal arm and continue to wear unseasonal gloves to cover up the metal hand? Can't they like make something more normal looking for him?

I posed the question to [info]ellyr_in_ink and her was response was "It's Bucky."

Dear Mark Miller,

I am VERY excited about this new Ultiamtes Avengers plot line I read about in Wizard. However, I'm also nervous.

Look, I think you did a brilliant job on your Ultiamtes run. And the concept you put forth sounds awesome (all though so many people will hate it I think), but it deals with something that historically Marvel has sucked at dealing with. Pregnancy!! DUN DUN DUN. No really Marvel you suck with this concept.

So . . . I'm trusting you here, Miller. Don't let me down.
Especially given this involves one of my favorite minor female characters.

On the other hand

The hardest one btw, was the Ultimates Steve/Tony one.
Tony can do 100 words in one sentence, so that that was hard to keep short *L*

The BSG one was also hard, again, because Starbuck can go on and on and on.

MCCoy lost his one line in the Sulu/Chekov fic, but I promised him I'd write an entire fic around it later. It was: "I'm a Dcotor not a matchmaker, damnit. Now, get out of here Sulu, before I loose your vaccination records."

Zomg when did THAT change!

Bucky Goofy
Whoa, I'm slow. I only just realized recently that Brubaker retconned out the entire way Bucky fount out Steve was Captain America.

I mean I knew he kinda sorta retconned a lot of Bucky's background, but Bucky meandering into a tent and catching Steve changing out of the Captain America costume is such an ingrained aspect of his origin story to me that the fact that Brubaker's retcon negated this story (or regulated it to made up propaganda status) simply didn't register with me.

And I gotta say, of all his retcons, this one bugs me the most so far.

For me, it is interesting that Bucky literally stumbled into Steve that way. It speaks both to Bucky's ability to be places where he should not be at time's of night he should not be up at, as well as Steve's own learning curve as he works out the super hero thing. There's something very human and real in that. So I'm not thrilled to see that part retconned, especially given there's no reason it can't still be there along with some of the more sensible changes I think Brubaker made.

I agree with retconning Bucky into having months of special ops training. I think that's a good idea; in fact, I kinda assumed it happened anyway. It just makes it less WTF for him to be Steve's partner and one of the Invaders.

BUT none of that explains why the military grabbed a 16 year old brat shoved him off to special ops training just so he could become Steve's partner. Okay, maybe they thought he'd be a good black ops agent, but then why decide Steve needed a partner. Had Steve indicated he needed one? And the whole "so Bucky can do things Steve can't do, like knife people" explanation seems thin given Bucky was every bit as much a symbolic image as Captain America was. So, anything I think Steve couldn't do for fear of bad press/moral, I'd think Bucky couldn't do either. I mean if you want to train someone to be sneaky and do the things you don't want the press to see, dressing them up in bright red and blue and using them as a propaganda is not logical.

Does that make sense? Basically I think Brubaker's retcon explains Bucky's fighting ability, but not why James became Bucky.

The "AHA! I know who Steve is" accident, in my mind, explains why he'd have become Bucky rather than just simply black ops. I mean say he's already training, out when he's not supposed to be just because he can now, and stumbled over Steve. Now he can either become just another covert agent OR Basptain America's Partner. You know he would totally have badgered people until they agreed he could be Steve's partner. I figure Bucky was one of those "what he wants he will get" kids. So he convinces people (or annoys them into submission) to have him made into a partner for Steve rather than any old Black ops agent.s I'm sure he could come up with some great arguments.

So, I don't see why Brubaker didn't just keep the "oops I probably shouldn't have seen that" aspect of the origin story AND THEN had military brass ship Bucky off to special ops training and all that stuff (or have had him already in it anyway and the stuff afterwards be gravy on top of whatever he already had), because that would explain not only how he became Bucky, but why specifically they choose James to be Bucky, despite his young age.

And also, I'm sorry declaring that he gets to do it because he is some kinda amazing wunderkin in the art of combat just annoys me. If it was all about skill and such, I don't buy a 16 year old discipline problem as the best person for the job.

So yes, ummmm is it okay if in my fanon universe Bucky still found out Steve was Captain America by walking in on him, and Brubaker is wrong? ^^;;;

I mean if Brubaker can declare Jack Kirby wrong, I can declare him wrong, right? I mean HE ADVOCATES not holding canon sacred, so that includes is new canon too . . . right XP
