I have Book called "All our Yesteryears" that my father gave to me. It was written in 1969 and contains a history of fandoms in the 1940s.

It brings me much glee and I'll try and share as often as I can starting with this great story from the Fannish Culture and Slang chapter (the slang btw is fascinating and I will be ganking it for fics once I determine who, aside from Ultimate Steve, is most likely to be involved in fan culture)

But first I muish share this tale:

[in regards to fan hoaxes] But these imaginative lies did not contain the suspense and mystery of the Earl Singleton case. He almost succeeded in hoaxing fans with a suicide that eventually became known as The Pseuicide [The, as on the only one OMG- Ani]. In February, 1941, several fans received letters from one Oliver King Smith, who identified himself as a roommate if Singleton at [MIT], and wrote: "He shot himself in the temple with a small caliber pistol." Singleton was a popular, talented fan who had been giving away fat issues of a fanzine devoted to poetry, Nepenthe, holding a powerful role in New England fandom, and contributing literate articles and versus to fanzines in quantities."

Dude he even had a sockpuppet female friend who put out an emotional outburst over his "death."

He got caught out because he stupidly wrote a letter to someone on Feb 10th, then people noticed that things moved to quickly, and someone contacted MIT who had no idea WTF that was about, and in the end everyone fussed up.

That just makes me laugh.
A lot.

Ughhhh
I musta had some awful dream last night. I woke up and my right palm was bleeding from where I'd cut into with my fingernail from clenching my fist so hard.
Damn. It sucks that I can't recall the dream.
ETa Ok on being more fully awake now and re-examining things, I clenched my palm so hard to leave a very obviouse and painful and red indention in my palm. The blood streak though was from nose ^^;;

In other totally unrelated news.
I'm being asked to RPG Captain America. (clearly not keeping with current Marvel Continuity to which I can only say THANK GOD) However, this is odd and from nowhere. I'm not confident I'll do a good job because I feel a lack basic familiarity with the character, as in I needed to look up his last name ^^;;; However others feel I'll do a splendid job despite minor hiccups like that that I can research and get over.

So I'm kinda amused but willing to give it a shot if they agree to let me use 1940's slang =p

Of Fannish Import

Doomed
I know I know 'Fannish Importance" should be an oxymoron, except when it's not.

LJ is having elections advisory board elections.
Now, see I wasn't gonna vote because I was honestly fine with whatever fandom rep we elected.

Except the problem is some asshat has opted to run for the lulz.

Now and care, and now I've voted, because I do not want an idiot who wants to run merely to thwart fandom because fandom killed his lolcats or something to be elected.

I don't usually think of fandom as serious business, but we are having enough issues with LJ without making a total mockery of the position on an advisory board they are offering their users -_-

So please, got vote.

bzzinglikeneon does a better job than I can do at work of summerizing issues but for me the bottom line is, it's a an actual position, with actual responsibilities, and yes LJ may not listen ever, but what chance do we have of the position beinf remotely taken seriously if we allow someone to fill the position merely as A JOKE *twitch*

I feel alone. He's only cute in fat suits ^^'''

Also, I is behind on the updateing of the [info]hp_art_project page. I know. I'm sorry. It's kinda how I work. Great periods of lag and then periods of crazy activity. I absolutely will be asking for help when things get busier.

If I were a internet connection, I'd be a landline ^^;;;

Why am I stupid

Facepalm
Hmmm got into an random disagreement over whether or not the original Battlestar is actually iconic. I don't know what amount of stupid possessed me to say I didn't think it was on the DBC forum, but I did.
I need to remember not to do things like that 'cause it just aggrevates people I think.

However, yeah, I really don't think it is that iconic a show.
Or more specifically, I don't think it's a cross generational iconic show.

I love it to pieces mind, but when I think of "iconic" media I think of TOS Trek, or Star Wars, or The Brady Bunch, or Terminator, or The Beatles.

For me BSG just doesn't have that kinda huge cross generational iconic thing going, as loveable as it is.

As for the new one, ask me again in 30 years =P

If anyone is ever doing a History of Fandom (in a general sense) I reccomend Lin Carter's "Lovecraft: A look behind the Cthulhu Mythos"

Obviously it's about one specific subject, but so much of this ties into to or relates to current fandom that it is really kinda cool to think this is all mostly pre 1930'S!

It's also got an interested idea of "ammature" versuse "professional" which isn't so much a discussion but a huge obvious bias that makes for interesting food for thought (and which i think is snobbish!).

I'll try and go into this more when I have time for more than a quick post-eating post because I think it would be of interest to some people.

The Formal return of The Daily Richard, at least until I forget again tomorrow )

And DARN IT! I was doing so good with the tags and then I let me guard down and feh . . major catch up time.

I'm reading a book on the Cthulu Mythos, and why this writer who relaly wasn't so great with you know characters or pacing or other things you generally think of when you think of amazing stories got so big.

One thing that is interesting to me is the perspective.
It's an older book written in 1972 by Lin Carter (who also did one of these for LotR) and what I just read is all about how Lovecraft really, for the first time, combined sci-fi and horror to create mmore modern horror stories in modern current settings.

And you know, I dind't think of that as a novelty when I read his stuff because for so long (especially after Alien), so much of sci-fi is sci-fi Horror, but yeah ok, 1930 something you really didn't ahve that much of and it was pretty inovative the idea that this ancient god like creatures were actually aliens who had once owned the earth and causing major horror in modern times.

So it's interesting to me to see basically this entire genera which is so friggen common today being attributed to Lovecraft.

Title courtesy of my father who always pokes fun at Lovecraft for saying something was beyond description and then trying to describe it for a page or so *L* I disagree with dad and don't think Lovecraft does it near as much as dad thinks, but none the less he does do it sometimes.

Class cubicle borg hell is going better than expected btw. However While we want you area to be uniquely yours there will be a limit of three personal items permitted in your cubical

Ok I get not, you know, having my entire collection of Star trek action figures up were or something . . . but three? And these are pretty big cubicals. Three is fairly limited for the space we have, and makes me doubt the sincerity of the first par tof that sentence -_-

Right now I have a lava lamp and a DHL colored frog that I won with Brandon and the state fair. I also have a cactus I want to bring up, but if I bring that. . . no art or photos of anyone *sigh*

DHL frog sits on my monitor so I'm kinda hoping maybe I can squeak an extra item in.

I'm also debating forgoing art/ohotos AND Cactus Bob (I name everything Bob)and bring the Starbuck figure back up.

Just to see *evil grin*

Speaking of Dolls *wibble*
God those Harry Potter dolls are AMAZING, the really nice ones. I may put on one my gift list (mom asked us to keep a gift list and e-mail her with updates so she can buy gifts all year long with some assurance we actually want these things)

I realize I'm the last perosn to know but

The Leaky seperated from the Lexicon?
SERIOSLY?

Shit.
Oh man Steve, you unbelievabele self serving fool.
How on Earth could you let yourself be dug into this bit a whole such that the Leaky actually just cut you out.

I mean . . . wow.
How could you think they would support you as this dragged out?
How could you not read the writing on the wall?
Even assuming you are somehow in the legal right (which I don't agree wiht but I'll tnertainin it)JKR sued you.
How can you think the Leaky would support you over JK Rowling!
I can ttoallys ee how you thought she might have been ok, but once it was clear she was not, and once it was clear she REALLY was not, how could you keep pushing? Was getting the Lexicon into a book truely that big a deal for you?

Dear god, please never let me shoot myself in the foot like this -_-

I don't know, I realize he dug his own grave, and I have never, since day one, thought Steve had the right to do what he was doing, but shit do I kinda feel bad . . . but kinda in the same way I felt bad when Darth Vader tossed the Palpatine over the side of that giant hole thing.

But sill.
Damn.

Fandom Memories

  • Mar. 19th, 2008 at 11:49 AM
happy
So [info]celestialsoda wrote abut the waning of the HP Fandom and that got me wondering:

What are some of your earliest HP_Fandom memories (for those of you from the HP_fandom , which is like 90% of my LJ even if you are not in it anymore)

And as an auxillary question, what are some of your earliest fandom memories period?

My Own Answer )

And now for a quick help:
I think I rgistered for Sweet Charity this morning, but I'm not sure, can someone check to see if I am up for auction? I can't access the site at work.

And also
I'm still willing to hand out art for donations to the National Eating Disorder Association, or for Alzhiemers Reseach

And this is spellchecked (waves to people from the anon poll). Errr at least most of it was. Add on comments like this weren't.

What's coming is possibly (ok very likely) a backhanded compliment to JKR . . . or a flat out insult, Take your pick.

Also ummmmm I kinda defined "fandom ani is involved with" as "series/story/whatever in which ani actively seeks out other stories for said series, as opposed to looking at pretty art for it, because it's one thing for me to want to see art for something and another to want to read whole other stories about it!

. . .

You know why I think I'm so into the Hp Fandom?  )
