I had the teeth extracted today. The Dentist looked at my mouth and rearranged his whole schedule because he thought I'd bee in real trouble if I waited any longer.
Fun time.

So I am watching Law and Order, being looked after by ellyr_in_ink , and I wrote this fic while she buy me soft foods ^_^

Title Last Christmas
Rating PG
Characters Bucky/Toro
Notes As lots of people have pointed out to Brubaker, Christmas for Bucky and Toro in 1944 likely did not involve a Dance Hall. I know his Winter Kills story (which is awesome) make it canon they were there on the 25h, and not at the Battle of the Bulge, but I wrote this anyway. ^^

Bullets slammed into the ground, driving Bucky from tree he'd been using as cover. Panicked, he looked around, then saw Toro motioning him toward the snow embankment. He ran thinking about the cold biting against his nose, not the bullets. As his back hit the snow, he felt the freezing wetness soak into the few dry spots he had left. Beside him, he could see Toro, pale skin and green shorts standing out against the white snow.

"Where's your camouflage," Bucky shouted. Toro turned and gave him a blank look, he indicated his ear to say he hadn't heard over the gunfire and grenades.

And the screaming.

Bucky pulled at the white sheet he'd fashioned into impromptu snow camouflage and the pointed to Toro and frowned. Toro shook his head a leaned closer. He smelled like burnt flesh.

"I burned it up dummy," he said.

Bucky nodded his understanding as he pulled out his gun to reload it.

Bucky watched Toro's mouth move as he said more, but machine gun bursts covered the words. Bucky leaned closer to let him know that then just leaned all the way in and kissed Toro as he shoved the bullets into his gun.

"Merry Christmas," he yelled over the sound of German voices raised in alarm.

Toro looked shocked, then shoved Bucky down into the snow drift as he flamed on. Gunfire was cut short and Bucky could hear people screaming, no even in German, just screaming.

"You too," Toro said, as he pulled Bucky out of the drift and against his lips. They barly touched before they broke part. "Cover me I'm going to take out that tank."

Bucky nodded and Toro flew off, leaving only melted snow behind.

Oh man, look at the difference the inker and the colorist make:

Behold Bryan Hitch's Art work (he's the penciler)

Awwwww! Steve!
See, pretty art!

But then Hitch goes to Reborn and we get:

LOOK! The Falcon is doing his best Mr. Fantastic impersionation!

WTF is with Sharon's outfit. Seriously. >.>
And the ponytail she and Black Widow have is just . .. . ugh no words.

I just can't get over how dissapointing the art in Reborn is. And it's not just the inker, though he's a big part because I've seen this inker on other works by other pencilers and it's the *same* mess.

I feel like Hitch is just phoning this in.
I get he had bucketloads of time on Ultimates AND was often late, but that doesn't stop the art in Reborn from being dissapointing.

I keep doing it in bits and pieces, so this is one of those pieces.

Sound came from all around the run down, one room, roach home. From above, Jason could hear the 'loving' couple, voices raised in combat as they expounded on their hatred for each other. Behind him, a baby noted the persistent fighting by adding shrill cries of it's own. It's mother punctuated every few minutes with a screamed 'Shut the fuck up." Jason didn't know if she meant the couple or the baby.

Probably both. He would. For all the good the walls did he might as well have invited the loving couple and the terrific mother into his own apartment.

Beside him, water dripped from the ceiling into a half full bucket. The dripping added a tip-tap sound that, for all its softness, was proving more annoying than the cries and shouts.

And then from the couch in front of him came the only sound that made Jason smile. Tom's mouth hang slightly open and as he inhaled, he sounded like a buzz saw. Jason would have poked Tom until he shifted his position and stopped the snoring. However, with the cacophony already in play, Jason didn't see the point in bothering his sleeping 'Robin'.

Tom snored again and Jason shook his head. He stared at Tom watching as red, green, and white light danced across Tom's features as the Christmas tree lights continued to flicker. Jason glanced at the little tree Tom had brought in. It had been such a Grayson gesture that Jason had at first wondered of the older Robin hadn't passed it along to Tom. But his meta was sentimental to bring a tree in all on his own.

Jason glanced back at Tom, who lay sprawled across the couch. One leg dangled off the edge and one arm was draped over his abdomen. He held a red blanket in his right hand, but it covered more of the floor than Tom. Jason stood and grabbed a tattered edge to spread the blanket back over Tom. As he tucked it in, Tom's eyes open and regarded him with a drowsy interest.

"Just taking care of you," Jason murmured.

Tom smiled and breathed a sound that might have been thanks before falling back asleep. Jason went back to his chair and pulled a cigarette and studied the ghost of the smile on Tom's face.

He liked Jason taking care of him. It was why, in the end, Jason had decided he would make a good Robin.

"I worried, you know," Jason murmured. "You don' look it, but you're old enough to be my grandfather . . . and a meta. Two big no's for a Robin."

Tom didn't stir. Jason leaned back in the threadbare green armchair and watched red light wash over Tom's face, followed by green.

"But then," he continued, "you listen to me. More over you do what I say so that I keep you around." Jason smiled. "You need me, and you know, I think that's the most important thing there is for a Robin." Jason took a long drag on his cigarette and thought of Dick and Tim, both so eager for Bruce's praise, even when they pretended to be on their own.

"That's why I was wrong to try and recruit them, huh. They're Bruce's. Always will be. He shaped them for years." Jason shook his head then slammed the cigarette butt against the coffee table and ground it into it was less than a stump in his fingers. "Looking back, I was probably lucky to die, you know, or I'd still be his little Robin too."

Jason exhaled smoke and looked at his sleeping Robin,. "But you, you needed someone to look after you in this big scary city, didn't you. Some one to follow." He grinned. "And I give you that."

And that, after all, was what being a Robin was all about. Following. Following, letting The Batman shape you into what he wanted because you couldn't find your own shape.

"Yeah," Jason murmured, "I think I was fucking luck to die."

He looked at Tom one last time before stretching out in his chair.

"Night," he murmured, running his boot along the leg that hung over the couch. "Training in the morning," Jason muttered as he closed his eyes and let the din lull him to sleep.

- End

Fic: This is Not a Drill, Invaders

I wrote a quick fic on Pear Harbor (which btw coworkers THAT"S WHY THE FLAG WAS HALF MAST!!!!!)
It's a little late . . . . hopefully it works well.

Title This is Not a Drill
Rating G
Characters Bucky, Steve (mentions Toro and Jim)
Word Count 1,043
Warnings A racial slur is used in this fic.
Notes the Invaders were active prior to Pearl Harbor, in some canons
Summary Bucky (and Steve) react to Pearl Harbor

This is Not a Drill

He was aware that Steve had left first. Bucky had tracked Steve in his peripheral vision, watching him as he went to the communications tent. That had made sense. No doubt the brass would be in contact within minutes after the fiasco. Through his numbness, Bucky managed to register a small stirring of surprise that The Invaders had heard of the attack from a civilian broadcast at not the military.

"The military must be running around more like a chicken with its head cut off than normal." Bucky muttered for the benefit of no one.

Namor left next. Bucky didn't see where he went, and couldn't bring himself to care.

Then Toro stirred. But rather than leaving, he walked over to Jim and fell against him. Jim in turn, pulled Toro close and leaned over to talk to Toro in a voice too soft for Bucky to hear. Bucky watched Toro sniffle and so Jim's arms tighten around his ward. He looked so paternal that Bucky felt nauseated. With a retching sound aimed at the Torches, he sprang to his feet and made his own exist.

After minutes of wondering, Bucky found himself approaching the same communications tent Steve had ducked to. With no announcement –Steve would know he was there already- Bucky raised the heavy flap and stuck his head in.

"Any word?" he asked.

Steve looked up and rubbed his eyes. His cowl sat on the table next to the two-way radio he hovered over. "No, not yet, Buck."

"Figured," Bucky replied, wandering further into the tent to sit on a pile of crates.

"Where are the others," Steve asked, his eyes on the silent radio.

Bucky sat cross-legged for a minute. "Namor went off." He shifted so his legs hung over the edge of the crate. "You know how he is. Not a word about where he was going or when he'd be back."

Bucky pulled his legs up again, and resumed his previous position. "As for the Torches-" Bucky scowled and jerked his thumb toward the left side of the tent. "Diapers ran off to cry in Jim's arms. Talk about over-dependence; I mean really the whole "pappy" thing?" Bucky rolled his eyes, but whatever derision he'd been about to say died when he caught the reproach in Steve's eyes.

Instead, he shrugged, and looked down at one of his pouches. He snapped it open and shut three times before speaking again. "I'm just saying he's a little immature," Bucky muttered, still looking at his pouch. "Nothing you and Namor haven't said."

Bucky picked up his canteen and began tossing it around, catching it each time with just one hand.

Steve looked at him and Bucky felt the full weight of his glare.

"Stop it, Buck."

Bucky gave him an insolent look and tossed the canteen once more between putting it away. "Grumpy," he chided.

"We're about to really go to war."

Bucky scoffed before he could stop himself. He felt himself turn red, but rather hide his face, he looked up at Steve. "Sorry pal, but we've been fighting for months now; what's the difference?"

"It won't be just us anymore," Steve said simply. "And we'll be over seas, probably for good now, Bucky."

"Well," Bucky said, biting his lip. "Well yeah. Course we will." He listened to the clicking of knobs as Steve messed with the small two-way radio.

"Any news yet," Bucky asked.

"Have you heard any?" Steve snapped, whirling around and jabbing his finger at Bucky.

"Whoa," Bucky said, waving his hands in a stopping motion. "Don't kill me just 'cause I'm closest."

Steve gave him an apologetic look, the one that always made Bucky think of a sad puppy, though he would never ever tell anyone that. He slid off the crate and went over to stand next to Steve, one hand resting on the table next to the radio, is finger brushing against Steve's cowl.

"What's eating you, pal," Buck asked. "And don't say Pearl Harbor. That's eating everyone."

"I need another reason?" Steve put his hand to his head and looked at Bucky with an expression that reminded Bucky that Steve wasn't all that much older after all.

"I wouldn't, Namor wouldn't, Toro probably wouldn't . . . but yeah you do. What's up Mr. Rogers?" Bucky put his hand on Steve's shoulder.

Steve folded his hands together as if in prayer and said nothing for several minutes. Then he looked back up at Bucky.

"Do you think it's our fault?"

"Huh?"Bucky said. He pulled his domino mask up onto his head and stared at Steve. "What? You mean the Jap's sneak attack. How the hell would that be our fault?"

"I'm Captain America," Steve gave Bucky a once over and managed the faintest of smiles. "And you're decked out fairly patriotically yourself." The trace smile slipped away and Steve sighed deeply. "We've made it pretty clear where America was going to stand in this war."

Bucky exhaled deeply and leaned against the table. "Never thought of that," he muttered. "You think if -if we'd stayed out then . . ." Bucky slammed his hand on the table. "Aw hell Steve, don't be stupid. We were gonna get in it one way or another. Yeah, maybe Captain American and Bucky made that even more obvious but-"

"But you think it would have still happened." Steve murmured.

"Even if it wouldn't have, you'd take back all the good we did, people we saved, battles we helped turn, just to save Pearl Harbor?"

Steve clasped his hands again and looked unsure enough that Bucky tightened the grip on Steve's shoulder and shook it. "C'mon Steve. Your problem is sometimes you just can't accept that you can't save everyone. It's war. You can't. Sometimes people will die no matter how much- no matter what you do." Bucky shook his head. "It's war."

Steve gave Bucky a wary look hat had half a smile hidden in it. "It's as simple as that, huh."

"Simple as that, yup," Bucky replied with a said smile. "It really has to be."

Steve shook his head, but the squawk of the radio interrupted whatever he'd been about to say. .

"To War," Steve said as he picked up the receiver.

-End

I accept as part of my canon that Tim is in love with Kon. Pretty much anything I've ever learned about Tim has been in a fic that shipped those two, so in my head, they're a pretty solid ship.

2. In mt fanon/canon, Tim doesn't really want to be Batman, or even stay on as a tights wearing hero. This has come up in just about every thing I have with a heavy Tim focus, so I've got it in my head that he's one of the most likely hero's to step down and I don't know . . . go into the FBI or CIA or Interpol or something like that. As opposed to running about in a costume in the middle of intergalactic scuffles.

frolicks requested
A reason Dick Grayson sucks
Dick can be overly broody about stupid things. I know, I know, it's the writer but I grew up with pre-crisis stuff so when there are long arcs about Dick having huge heaping amounts of Angst over Bruce and want to smack him. And then smack DC writers. It's just . .. cliché? I don't know, I mean sure he'd have some issues but lord on high DC can be heavy handed at it annoys the frick outta me.

Also his ponytail/really long hair. I will seriously not read comics with the ponytail in it. Okay maybe, but it would need to be epic good. I loath that look. It was a horrid look, and I cannot believe they used it in the animated show. OMG HATE IT. Seriously, he looked like a idiot, like some kinda cheap thug. Really can't express the depths of my hate for that ponytail. I remember being little and seeing it being all OMG THEY RUINED ROBIN.

dbassassin requested
A reason Sirius Black sucks
I'm gonna get in trouble for this, but . . . his fangirls. Not like the normal ones but the over the top OMG he does no wrong, omg if you don't like him you are evil, froth, froth, flail, types. Sadly he as a lot of those and I kept bumping into them and it kinda tarnished the character, because they made him so stereotypical and one dimensional.
Errr a reason based more on his character is . . . he played a prank that almost caused his friend to eat someone. that's sucky, no questions. Everyone makes mistakes, but god damn, that's ummmmmm that'd be like a Law and Order case or something in which you learn the high school kid is deeply distrubed in a scary way or something. Linked to that, he can be immature and less than helpful.

fpb requested
A reason Captain America sucks
He can be too perfect sometimes and/or too clearly reflects what the author thinks is "right." Sometimes I feel like there's no separation between the man and the concept, and that makes him boring and too political. Like marvel gets to caught up in the Mythos of Captain America and forgets there is an actual man under there. Steve Rogers will have an opinion on things unique to him as a person, and IMHO to some degree it should reflect the era he was raised in. And fans need to stop freaking of "Steve" doesn't support something they think he should because Steve is not Captain America, and trying to make Steve safe for everyone deprives him of his personality and interest. No bondy is perfect, and no one will believe in and behave exactly as another person thinks is correct. And he sure as heck won't make billions of readers happy 100% of the time, but I think tries to do this too often and again, makes him suck.

This is still why the Steve in Ultimates is, more often than not, my favorite Steve. He gets to be an interesting person first, then Captain America.

errmm another more character driven reason is his stubborn streak and his pride. Holy god but that man got in some stupid tiffs, especially with Tony, over basically his pride being stepped on. Like Christ when he lost his powers, even after he got them back he had moments of extreme team-spirit moral destroying misplaced anger. I was funny, because you don't think of Steve as acting that way much, but holy god can he if he wants to. This sucks more because some Marvel writers take this trait and make it overly melodramatic and exaggerated, which comes of as OOC, rather than a normal human flaw.

shiny_glor_chan requested
a reason Jason Todd is awesome
Jason is awesome because he is a great foil for Dick Grayson. There is no one who will drive you nuts like family.
Or he should be. He has that potential awesome but then the writers are all lazy morons and are all AHHH GUNS/Killing = EVIL. No one can be good a kill people! Black and white morality!

WTF, am I the only one who watched Westerns? I wish they'd chill Jason out and make him not so over the top so he was a better foil for Dick, because it's actually an interesting philosophical divide they have when not overrunning with crazy bad writing. I get his murders people but mergh, so did Bucky in Winter Kills and that was much more interesting than the over the top idiocy the writers seem to like to do with Jason, but comics and their excesses, what can you do.
Write fanfiction! Fanfic writers make Jason even more awesome. Sorry. Fixed now

I think Toro regrets not focing the brass to let him and Jim come along with Steve and Bucky when Steve and Bucky were sent against Zola. I figure he never knew how exactly Steve and Bucky died or anything, but he probably just felt like had he, or Jim, or Namor been there, they could have saved them.

Tossing Jim aside for Impostor Parents. I think the second or third story with Toro in it has him getting duped by fake parents and he's pretty awful to Jim.I think that would be one of those nagging regrets that every time you remember it you're like "oh god, I can't believe I did that."

And bonus, not being able to save his parents. I mean he saves so many people, and can absorb fire, if he'd been able to do that three years/one year/one week earlier, maybe he could have saved his parents (Marvel retconing him coming into his powers a week after his parents die is especially mean. Granted the crash probably killed them more than the fire, but who knows). Randomly in my canon, Toro is not fond of trains, which made him a fun part of the circus at times *L*

mintriddell requested
two people Bucky secretly crushes (or crushed) on
Ginger Rogers because loves watching Ginger Rogers dance in the flicks and he really likes her smile. He would kill-but-not-really to meet her.

Bucky also had a crush on LaVerne Andrews. Toro noticed Bucky staring a little too hard at her during a USO performance and pretty much doesn't let Bucky live the crush down Bucky, of course, denies the crush exists at all and insists he just likes their singing.
Oh look random little ficlet.
It's from comment_fic and the prompt was Bucky/Toro adjusting to the 21st century. That was interesting to think about because they both have different areas of adjustment. Too missed maybe from the 70's on (adjusting for Marvel Time warp here) and Bucky sorta missed but probably had to be updated on tech and such, as the Winter Soldier, which he'd remember.

Anyway, I opted to focus on the current Green Trend. It's a nod to my Grandfather, because this is why he recycled back in '91.

Title Helping Out
Rating G
Characters Bucky and Toro (minor slashy moment, or Bucky being Bucky, you pick)

Helping Out

Bucky leaned against the wall of the New Avenger's hallway and watched Toro dump a pile of metal pieces from some gadget someone had thrown out into a box.

"Planning on making a robot?" Bucky asked. "If you are, you should know there are strict rules about making robots among the Avengers."

Bucky bit back a laugh as Toro glanced up from the recycling bins. He had the look of total irritation he could only sum up when he first woke in the morning. Not saying a word, Toro walked to the other room and came back with various cans and lots of paper.

"You are not recycling my comics, Toro." Bucky said, but made no move to rescue them from the bin.
Instead, he watched as Toro brought the two living room wastebaskets over and began to sort out the recyclable paper. After a few minutes of watching is friend obsess over the recycling, Bucky threw up his hands.

"You win," he said. He shoved his hands into the pockets of his brown jacket and went over to Toro. "What the hell are you doing."

Toro looked up at him like he'd asked what a gun was. "I'm recycling."

"I can see that." Bucky replied. Ignoring him, Toro stood and began to head for the den, but Bucky stepped into Toro's path. Utilizing the seconds he had between Toro registering what he'd done and Toro reacting, Buck placed his thumb against Toro's lower lip. As it usually did, the gesture stopped Toro dead.

"Why," Bucky asked, tracing Toro's lip with his thumb, "have you decided to get with the green trend so suddenly."

Toro pulled back from Bucky's finger and shook his head. "It's not that Buck," he answered. Then he gave Bucky a sterner look , one that he might have picked up from Steve or maybe even Namor. "There's a war on."

"Oh," Bucky muttered. "Right."

Bucky looked at Toro and he knew his look was probably patronizing, but he couldn't help it. The gesture was so very Toro, but the reality . . .

"Toro, I don't think- I don't think recycling helps the war the same way it did. I'm pretty sure -"

A heavy sigh filled the hallway as Toro crossed his arms over his chest and looked away. "Yeah, I noticed. I just-" Toro shrugged and gave Bucky a pained look that caused Bucky to immediatly rest his hand on Toro's shoulder.

"I just wanted to do something, since supers can't fight on the front lines anymore, and everyone seems to just . . . not to-" Toro's words faltered and Bucky squeezed his shoulder tighter.

"Want me to drive you to the recycling center?"

"Would you? Everyone still drive's so fast, I hate getting on the freeways."

Bucky nodded and smiled at his friend. "Sure thing but coffee first? Please?"

He was rewarded with a laugh from Toro. "Oh god yes, unless you made it!"

"Nope," Bucky replied dragging Toro toward the kitchen, "I think Clint did, which may be worse."

"Not possible," Toro said, and he laughed again.

-End

Ha! I finished one of my het fics. Tom (Toro) and his wife Ann. I'd been mulling over what kinda personality I wanted Ann to have (because lets be honest, Marvel is doing good to give their leading ladies personalities sometimes, let alone the random wives of killed of sidekicks). I noticed that she knew about Toro's abilities, and I wondered if she knew he was a mutant. That would have been interesting because then she'd have married him right at the beginning of Marvel U's first wave a mutant hysteria (give or a take a few retcons).

Soooo I went with that.

The title btw comes from this quote:

It is often easier to become outraged by injustice half a world away than by oppression and discrimination half a block from home. -Carl T. Rowan

Title Half a Block from Home
Pairing: Toro (Tom) Raymond/Ann Raymond
Rating: G
Beta Much thanks to mintriddell for giving this a go over
Notes: There is a medical/technology anachronism in this, but lets face it, Marvel U science is way advanced why faster than in our Universe, yes.

Synopsis: The fickleness of the American public affects Ann and Toro's life.

Half a Block From Home

Just as Sergeant Friday was about to close the case, a newscaster cut him off with an announcement of "pressing" news. Ann jerked her head up from the model plane she was working on and glared at the small radio across the room.

"The Russians had better have invaded," she muttered, turning her attention back to the plane. She concentrated on getting just enough glue onto the wing that it held to the body, but didn't show. Halfway through though, the report grabbed her attention again.

" . . . . have urged residents not to panic, but they have confirmed reports of a mutant in - "

Ann slammed her hand down on the table and almost knocked her chair over as she pushed out of it. She stomped over to the radio, face contorted with rage, as though the radio had personally insulted her.

"Of course," Ann snarled, her finger pounding against the off switch. "What's scarier than commies, desegregation, and a Catholic in the White House combined? Stupid, fear mongering-" She fell silent and took a deep breath while she mentally counted to ten. Then she took another deep breath and rested her small hands on her hips. Ann glanced back at her model.

The idea of fitting minute pieces no longer suited her mood as it had thirty seconds ago. She turned to look at the cabinet drawer that held all her baking supplies. A sudden urge to make a cake took hold over her, but then she remembered the broken oven.

"Damn," Ann muttered. Rolling her eyes upward, she stared at the ceiling for a moment before sighing. "I guess I could read a book."

She looked into the living room, noting that the bookshelf seemed miles away. Ann stayed where she was and glanced back at the model kit spread over the kitchen table.

As she stood there, torn between which hobby required less effort, the click of the front door handle cut into her thoughts. Her gaze flickered to the Donald Duck wall clock above the cookbooks. She frowned and took a second look at the time. It was still only one in the afternoon, far too early for Tom to be home.

Ann jumped as the sharp crack of the door banging into the doorframe echoed through the house.

"Tom?" Ann called over the cursing she could hear. She came out of the kitchen, her hands rubbing together as she looked for her husband. Sure enough, it was Tom by the door, cursing as he pulled off his shirt.

Ann could see blackened holes around the cuffs and collar, and there was smoke rising from the parts of the shirt still in contact with his skin. It was so rare that Tom lost control of his abilities that Ann's first thought was that someone had set fire to him. Then the reality set in and she gestured into the kitchen.

"Go sit, Tom," Ann said, as she pushed her questions away. "I'll get you some water."

Tom finished pulling the burnt shirt off and tossed it into a nearby wastebasket as he headed toward the kitchen. When he walked by her, Ann could feel the heat radiating from him. Brow knitted, she watched as Tom made his way to the concrete chair in the far corner of the kitchen by the icebox. He flopped down so hard onto it that Ann winced in sympathy for his tailbone.

"You know," Tom commented as Ann filled a bowl with water, "I should thank Maddie for this joke gift. A flame proof chair actually has provide useful." He made a noise that sounded like he'd tried to laugh but it hadn't been able to find the energy.

Ann looked over from the sink and nodded, "Yes, it has."

"Sorry about the shirt," Tom muttered. "I know you liked it."

"It's a shirt," Ann said, picking a sponge up from the counter. "I got it at the dime store."

"Oh," Tom said in a flat voice as Ann dipped the sponge into the bowl, then squeezed the cold water onto his shoulders. The water hissed as it hit his skin and a small cloud of steam rose into the air.

"Try to cool down, dear."

Tom looked up at her, a smile tugging at the edges of his frown. Ann dripped some more water onto his back. It still turned to steam, but slower this time. She soaked the sponge again, then placed it carefully against Tom's skin. Steam rose from around the edges, but the sponge itself wasn't bunt.

As she spread the cool water around his back and shoulders, Ann watched Tom. He'd become still and quiet, and his features had taken on the blank expression that meant he wasn't just angry, he was scared as well. When steam stopped rising from the sponge, Ann put her hand on Tom's shoulder. He reached up and took it and Ann knew that more than just words had Tom upset.

"Is everyone all right?"

Tom started and looked up at her, eyes wide as though he'd forgotten she was there at all.

"Has anyone died?" Ann asked, clarifying what she meant.

"Wha? Oh," Tom said, shaking his head. "It's not that, it's," Tom's expression darkened into a scowl as he let himself react again, "I was dismissed at work today."

He spat out the last part so fast that it took Ann several beats to register what Tom had said. When the meaning of the sentence finally took form in her mind, she felt her test tighten and she knew her expression matched her husbands.

"What? Why?" she demanded. "What could you possibly have done?"

Tom ran his fingers through his hair, and looked down at his hands. Ann waited in silence for him to collect his thoughts.

"You remember the medical test they wanted us to take last month?"
Ann nodded, "To make sure all the firemen were healthy, you said."
Tom snorted. "And to make sure we were all non-controversial as it turns out." Tom brought his hand to his mouth and lowered his head. Ann kept moving the sponge in slow circles on his back even though Tom had cooled to a normal temperature.

"They ran everyone's blood for the X-Gene." Tom kept his gaze focused on a porcelain figurine that sat on the kitchen shelf. The smiling bride and groom waved at him as he trudged through his explanation.

"Jefferson called me in to go over my results and why they made me unfit for my job. I tried to argue that being immune to fire was a pretty good quality to have in a firefighter, but the chief said it was a state mandate. No mutants on a government payroll. But it wasn't just- it . .." Tom closed his eyes and leaned against Ann's hands.

"Tom?" Ann prompted in a low voice.

"They were scared of me, Ann. People I've worked with for five years were terrified of me. Even Robertson, and I saved him during the war. He knew I had powers." Tom's expression darkened. "But because I get my power from a stupid gene instead a chemical spill, or benevolent aliens, or lightening, or crazy government experiments, I'm a threat?" Steam began to rise from the sponge again as Ann and Tom shared a long stretch of silence.

A chuckle cut through the silence, and Ann realized she'd begun to laugh.

"What?" Tom demanded. "What's funny?"

Ann gave him a smile and a wink. "You promised me you would find a way to get me out of those awful sewing get-togethers that her highness, Mrs. Welsh, throws. I think you couldn't have done better if you tried, dear." Ann laughed again and patted Tom's shoulder. "Married to a mutant? Mrs. Welsh won't let me get within ten feet of her house now."

"You think we should be open about this?" His eyebrows shot up and his brow furrowed in confusion.

"You hide enough as is, Tom." Ann answered. "Besides, if your co-workers know, all their wives know, and of all their wives know, everyone knows, so we might as well be open. What's the worst that can happen?"
The looked of utter cynicism that Tom gave her almost made Ann laugh again.

"I'm thinking angry lynch mobs, Ann. You've seen the news."

"Oh pooh," Ann said, waving her hand and splattering Tom with droplets of water from the sponge. "You defeated Nazi hoards. What's a few angry neighbors compared to that?" She saw Tom finally smile and smiled again herself.

"Well," Tom answered, drawing the word out. "People were okay with me setting Nazi's on fire, but I think people will mind if I set my neighbors on fire."

"Even if the difference seems largely cosmetic?"

Now Tom laughed as well. "Even so, I'm pretty sure."

For a moment they both laughed together, but all too soon the dark cloud returned. Tom looked away and released a heavy sigh. "That'll be on my record now you know. No one will employee me." He looked up at Ann, blue eyes wide with worry. "What'll we do?"

Ann moved so she could place her hand against his chest. "Don't worry," she murmured. " We'll work something out, even if we have to move, or I have to work again. I'll live in a circus trailer with you if I have to, okay?"

Tom's eyes widened further. Smiling, he Ann's hand to press a kiss against her fingers. "Thanks, Ann," he whispered.

She bent and wrapped her arms around him, letting him rest is head against her for a minute. Then, Ann patted Tom firmly on the back before grabbing his arms and yanking him up.

"Come on," she said in her no nonsense voice that Tom had compared to some WACs he'd known, " I've wanted to bake all day, but the stupid oven won't work right. You're going to be the oven."

Grinning, Tom shook his head,. "I don't heat evenly Ann. I'm a lousy oven."

"We'll figured something out," Ann said. "Besides if I have to work, you'll need to know how to cook, so pay attention."

Tom chuckled and followed her over to the counter, "Hey I cooked a little in the war,"

"Fermentation doesn't count," Ann said, shoving a mixing bowl into his hands. She was rewarded with another laugh from her husband, and when Tom began to protest that he'd done more than that, Ann knew he'd be all right.

-End

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.
And I hope everyone who works in retail, like my husband and friends, freaking survives the experience!

Here is my little fandom bit for Thanksgiving, all I really had time to get out (and even that was at what, 1:00 am *L*)

Title Making Do
Characters Steve and Bucky
Rating G and gen

Making Do

What do you think?" Steve asked, turning to Bucky. Bucky leaned forward to get a better look at the ground, jostling Steve as the he did so. The fallen log serving as their chair hardly held Steve let alone Steve and Bucky, but they'd made it work.

"You kidding me? You left out the mashed potatoes, Steve."

Steve looked aghast and quickly picked up the long stick he'd set beside him. After a second's thought, Steve drew a bowl with a heaping pile of lumpy stuff into the dirt in front of him and Bucky. He frowned at it as he went over the image with his artist's eye. He added a few wavy lines, looked again, and then set the stick back down.

"Can't let them get cold," he explained to Bucky.

Grinning, Bucky looked at the dirt picture in front of him. An entire Thanksgiving feast lay carved into the ground before him and Steve. There was a table spread with mashed potatoes. Next to those were green beans, a green bean casserole that looked the same, but Bucky had insisted on anyway. Another plate held corn on the cob, because Steve felt you had to have that. Beside the corn was cranberry sauce and then the gravy boat. Both men had wanted rolls on top of rolls, and of course, what was Thanksgiving without a pumpkin pie -Bucky's preference- and an apple pie - Steve's preference. Next to those sat a cherry pie, just for good measure. In the center of it all, already carved, was a turkey bigger than anything Bucky and Steve had ever had before.

"That's perfect." Bucky concluded. He licked his lips, then reached for his canteen. Twisting off the top, he toasted Steve with it."Happy Thanksgiving Mr. Rogers -I call the bigger drumstick."

"Happy Thanksgiving, Mr. Barnes," Steve replied with a laugh. He lifted his own canteen and returned the toast. "-and no, you don't, that's mine."

End

Some thoughts: Let me first say this is based on my observations and is yes, a generalization. I know there are cases where what I mention below does not hold up, but I'm just talking about a reaction I've seen that is common enough to give me pause.

. . . I'm also babbling , so I don't knwo that I get my point across well ^^

Anyway:
I'm trying to write a fic about Tom and Ann Raymond (Toro and his canon wife). I've actually got several plot bunnies nibbling at me for this bunny, as well as for Ultimate Steve and Gail, his canon fiancée.

What keeps hanging me up though, is the reaction I've seen in all fandoms to male/female couples niggeling in the back of my head.

And I don't just mean that a female character, no matter how well written, and weather she is canon or non-canon, still gets more Mary-Sue accusations than a male character.

What I mean is fandom's reaction to the author and some of the things I've seen written in hate memes and such. The accusation that it's all author insertion, especially when the author is writing with favorite characters is common and that's a perception that would annoy the heck outta me.

I realize it's a silly thing to be hung up on, but some of the comments I've seen written about authors of het ships do give me pause.

Which then erks me because how much stupider is it that because of reactions I've seen throughout fandom I'm actually more hung up about writing canon relationships than I am writing utter crack ships . . . just because one canon character is the female partner of the male character I like, and fandom is typically mean not just to the characters, but often to the people who write them.

Jason/Toro not remotely worried that anyone would think it was a self insert and mock me.
Toro/Ann, yeah it occurs to me that with ships like that I've seen a lot of snickering in hate memes about "ohh she wants to be her."

Anyway, this is in no way going to stop me as I like the plot bunnies, but I just notice that yeah, writing a canon het couple with a male character I'm known to like a lot has me more concerned than all the crack shipping I write.

. . . . also I notice all my icons are male, since LJ deactivated a slew of my icons. ;ljasfjsa;fj;sadjfaskdfjkdsa. Okay at least Catherine Black is in some of them. BTW Catherine Black=amazing female character. And yes, she was fridged.

These first few are from the Invaders Comic in the 70's.
I'm never quite sure what to say to Frank Robbins; however, I'm always happy when someone else has to take over for him. It's just *odd*

Nothing I scanned quite demonstrates that the full scale of the oddness his art can generate, but they're still a bit WTF.

    ">

This is why Bucky knew how to fly Namor's plane in Captain America: Man With Now Face. I mean yeah okay they want to hurry her outta the room but geeeeez!

The Torches fight using interpretive dance >.<
Frank likes to get as much of the legs and arms onto a panel as he can, even if it defies anatomy, perspective, and logical body positions.

I just wanted to point out that Bucky is saving Toro here, because it doens't matter how hot you get if shrapnel impales your spleen. I guess it's a good thing for Bucky that Toro doesn't flame on as fast as the Torch.

So clearly she knows who he used to be.

Awww last words to his wife, and a hitch the the Marvel time line. Toro's entire death and who was active as a superhero when he died mucks the Marvel timeline badly. I'm waiting to see if Marvel fixes it in the Torch comic.
They've already decided Toro ages slowly, which I think is a random and silly cope out. He does need an explanation for looking 20 when he should be 40, but there are better ways IMHO.
Okay may be last post for a bit because I'm posting from kijikun's computer.
See mine kinda . . . is a paperweight now.
Probably forever.

So "laptop" will be going on the X-Mas list >.>

Which is why I won't put the meme here because god knows if I'll get to it, but here are answers to question people asked me.

1. How old are you?
28 ^__^

2. How are you liking DCU fandom thus far?
Funtimes. I'm still creeped out by Bruce/Dick though. But I mean other than that very much fun. However I'm also not like poking around much. I've got this save little corner of Robin fandom, which I can stretch to include Teen Titans and Garth, and I'm happy. I'm debating poking the Green lantern's which would thrill my dad because Hal Jordan was always his favorite but I'm not quite there yet.

3. Which Robin is your favorite?
Dick Grayson. He will always be the one true Robin to me. Just because I grew up with him and watched the TV show. I kinda prefer a lot of the Pre-Crisis stuff though. I'm not so thrilled with the re-write on his and Bruce's relationship sometimes :(
And his long hair sucks. Dick should NEVER have long hair again >.> God Damn 90's

4. Will you draw me chibis (XD you never answered the last time I asked, and I'm persistent)?
Heh sure, just poke me with what you need and a when you need it by. I may have to backburner it through until I get done with some stuff for my art table.

5. Where do you live (be as specific of as vague as you like)?
Texas.
This is probably why I'm sympathetic to Jason.
Sure he goes over board, but the whole "shoot bad guys dead" yeah, I'm okay with that and have no issues with guns in and of themselves ^^

1) What's your favorite art medium to work with? What do you like best about it? Is there any thing about it that frustrates you?
My favorite medium is watercolor, hands down. I like how it's a little unpredictable, and honestly I just love how it works. The must frustrating thing though is that it never scans as well as say copic markers. I loose some of the subtle colors and the way they mix. Some pictures are worse than others, but it's always frustrating.

2) I've never watched the original BSG. What do you like most about it?
Characters. Hands down. I loved the characterizations and interactions. Also the hole situation. I know it's goofy and all, but there's a lot of fun chemistry. I also enjoy getting to work in ancient myths and such. I don't buy the "ancient astronaut" idea, but I think it's fun to play with. What I really like is the potential. The original show had to be all family safe and all, but fans are wonderful at taking the situations and exploring them.

3) What do you think draws Toro and Bucky to each other and how did the other Invaders treat their relationship?
Ohhh man this answer could be a fic *L*
Umm well I think part of it is no one else went through what they both did in the war, so to speak. I mean there were other young soldiers, but they weren't doing what Bucky and Toro were, and the other Invaders were all adults. Probably lonely too.

Bucky is the one who in my canon actually as the biggest problem, both with Toro and himself, which gets messy.

Steve had to decide what he thought, because he would have had a "normal" upbringing more or less, which at that time included homophobia. But he would work past that because he couldn't reconcile Toro with the things he'd grown up hearing about homosexuals. So it would take Steve a second to think, but in the end he'd be okay. I'm writing this on the understanding that ye,s his roommate in college (?) was gay, but my understanding is he did not know that until after WWII. If wrong, I'll re-work this to take into account knowledge or Artie, which would just make Steve even more okay with it all.

Jim doesn't understand why there would be anything wrong with it, but worries from the PoV of knowing just how vicious humans can be, and doesn't want them hurt. I think at first also he doesn't 100% trust Bucky to not be using Toro just because there's no one else around.

Namor considers it all beneath his care and just wishes they'd shut up at night and that Jim would stop worrying.

I really haven't thought about Union Jack and Spitfire.

4) Later, when they were assigned to separate ships, did Sulu and Chekov continue their relationship? If so, how?
OMG! This is one of my unwritten ficlets for these two. And no, I don't think they would have stayed together when they were on separate ships, because I got the idea they wouldn't have had an expectation to get back together regularly. But I think they did after Wrath of Kahn. Actually the other fic I have is Sulu asking Chekov to be his XO on the Excelsior (which Chekov as in some books) but ending the relationship because he doesn't want to be involved with his second in command.

5) How did you come back to comic books after being away and do you have any favorite non-superhero books?
Uhhhhh *thinks* I think the main thing is I got expendable income again *L *I never fully got out of comics because I always picked up Usagi Yojimbo and Distant Soil, and had my boxes of comics, and anything my dad gave me (which going through all that appears to be 90% JLA Christmas Specials *L*) and such, but not like this.

Partially I think it helped that my best friend and I both got into Steve/Tony at the same time and really liked that. So that helped because you know, I lived with another crazy fan. ^__^
A lot of fandom friends were also into comics, and probably the movies helped a bit, reminding me how much I did like them.

Favorite non superhero: USagi Yojimbo, A Distant Soil, ElfQuest, Bone, I don't know if you count Amethyst as superhero, but I love that one.
Things go wrong and Cap's spirit has to save Buck's soul from a fate worse than death.
Summary: Seriously, you'd think people in fictional stories would know better than to touch ouija boards.

Listening to the two friends brought Bucky's memory back to the war and the down time he and Steve had spent together between battles, just being young.

2. Title: Halloween In Bed
Gift For: milleniumrex
Rating: G
Pairings/Characters: Bucky/Kate, Patriot, Wiccan, Teddy, Stature
Labels: Fluff, fan comic
Warnings: Kate is underaged, but other than that, nothing.
A/N: This comic is intentionally without words. I thought it would be cute that way.
Prompt: "Prompt 2: Young Avengers/Captain America, Hurt/Comfort; a training injury ruins Kate's Halloween plans, so Bucky brings Halloween to her. I'd like Bucky/Kate in a pre-existing relationship. Horror movie snark is always a plus, too. :)
Summary: The Young Avengers are all set to go out for Halloween, when Bucky points out Kate can't and they are not going to exclude her. Nobody argues with Bucky.

Preview:

Halloween in Bed: Full sized

3. Title: One Night In Many
Gift for: lydia_morlock
Rating: R
Labels: None
Warnings: Depending on canon, Kitty may be underage here by two years
A/N: You presented an interesting rare ship and I hope I did them justice. I really liked the Kitty and Caliban arc way back in the early X-Books, and based the characterization of that, rather than Caliban's more recent stories. I hope it works.
Summary: Kitty gives Caliban a treat on Halloween Night

One Night In many
